9th Conference of the
European Association for Research on Adolescence in Porto, Portugal,
May 2004
by Olga Solomontos-Kountouri
The 2004 Biennial Conference of the European Association for
Research on Adolescence (EARA) took place in Porto, Portugal in May
5-8, 2004. The conference’s small size and intimate nature welcomed
both European researchers and participants from the United States, as
the collaboration between EARA and SRA continues to grow and
thrive. The interspersal of many common breaks from the program
promoted dialogue between American and European researchers, between
students and senior researchers, and amongst potential
collaborators. A general atmosphere of friendliness and openness
made these interactions even more fruitful.
The programme of papers,
posters, and invited presentations covered a variety of important
topics and new trends in the research of adolescence. The
posters, fewer in number compared to American conferences, provided
opportunity for much more personal contact and little limitation to
viewing all posters of interest. All sessions were highly
attended through the last day.
We all get exited by the overwhelming
hospitality, politeness, and great service of the conference
organizers, including several cultural social events and assistance
finding appropriate restaurants and other non-conference-related
activities in the magnificent city of Porto.
EARA students’ reunion
was great, amongst us many new members who get involved very quickly.
Marda and Filomena arranged for a memorable outing. In our bi-annual
meeting we discussed how we would promote further our union and we vote
for the two new positions. I am sure we are waiting for the next
conference in Antalya!
